Subject: [CHS] Ways of spelling WATSON ??
Date: Thu, 02 Dec 1999 19:40:10 +0000

Apologies to all on the Manchester group who saw the same sort of query
from me earlier this year, but I am getting desperate/puzzled.

My several times grandad was Benjamin Murgatroyd WATSON. In
October 1865 he registered his last child, he did all the registering of his
children. In November 1867 his widow re-married a workmate of his
called Smith (groan) in the parish church, not likely to be bigamy then
and she was certainly the right woman. In 1870 his son said 'deceased'
at his marriage.

Easy ? No. His death wasn't registered at local or national level under
Watson. He isn't in the local churchyard or the cemetery that served the
area, his burial can't be found in the parish church. He had lived in the same
couple of miles since his birth in 1820.

Then it occured to me that I have also 'lost' his parents and two of his
children
and if they had died after Ben then his wife would have registered them.
Presumably she registered Ben's death too. So maybe she had a speech
impediment ?? Her accent would probably have been a curious mixture
of Derbyshire & Lincolnshire, I've never heard a Lincolnshire accent.

So can anyone think of mis-spellings of Watson ? I've tried chanting it
very fast but all that happened is that the cat looked worried
despite being assured that this was the recommended thing to do.

Or am I going to go through EVERY single death for the two years ???
The action took place away from Cheshire but it's the sort of problem
we all face (if unfortunate) so I thought I'd ask.

Jane
