John Oliver asked whether JOHES/JOHIS SPARKES is an early way of
spelling John or a name in its own right.

These abbreviations are from the Old English List - lots of ways of
spelling John !

Jon = Jonathan
Jon + superscript a = Jonathan
Jno = Johannes = John ** always **
Joh = John
Joh +superscript es = John
Jo = John
Ioh = John (I always = J in an abbreviation)
Jas = Jacobus = James
Ja + superscript s = Jacobus = James (also Ja + superscript bus)
Jos = Joseph or rarely Josias
Josh = Joshua
Jos + superscript h = Josiah
