Here here!! I agree with Margaret. Those of us on this list should
continue to help each other in the spirit of the list. Like another lister
I do sit on the fence, and appreciate
whole heartedly various society's needs to perpetuate. Without some form of
control they will be unable to generate funds to continue cataloguing data
that we all find so beneficial and cost effective. So the simple solution
to me seems to be "don't offend by OFFERING look ups", but be prepared to
help individuals with specific enquiries.
I have freely contributed my time to my local FH society by inputting data
from parish registers to databases for their sole use and can fully
understand how they may feel when use of their data is 'freely and publicly'
offered as a 'look up' tool. Most society's offer this look up facility
themselves and the extremely low price they charge for this service helps
generate enough money to carry on and produce yet another set
of parish records etc in a form we can all access. These societies need all
the support they can to do this.
Let's not continue to knock either side, after all we are all looking for
the same results one way or another. We are all very grateful when we get a
snippet that breaks down the wall, and many of us have spent huge sums of
money doing it. It is extremely good when someone from the list comes up
with the vital missing link, sadly it doesn't often happen. If the
society's were able to produce more info in a usable form such as these CDs
perhaps it would happen more often.
So please don't knock it. Sorry to go on, I see both sides, but you can't
have it always!
