Hello Anne,

My father supposedly 'ran away' from England to Canada in his teens, having
(according to my mother much later in life) put his age *up* not down. It
was
always a joke in the family that he didn't really know how old he really
was, as
he altered his birth certificate so many times in his life, putting it up
when he was
young, and down when he got old, according to what he wanted people to
think!!

The story as I knew it was that he had gone there to work on the Canadian
Pacific Railway
although I think it was already finished by this time (probably abt: 1910 -
1914). However,
whatever his real reason for going, he was there either at the outbreak of,
or during,
WW1, and he joined up with the Canadian Mounties in the Fort Gary Horse.
At the end of the war he was demobbed in London, and never went back to
Canada, although he
always wanted to. Many years later we came to Australia instead.

Best wishes from Diana in Cairns
