DO we presume you do not possess the 1881 CDs yet? If you did, you would
surely have tried to do what you are asking and discovered the answer for
The answer is, Yes, you can certainly enter a town - either as a birthplace
or census area, or both - without any name, either first name or surname.
You cannot enter a specific street address unless you have the special
software which enables you to do so, or the latest version of the resource
viewer (which I haven't got round to getting yet, so I don't know exactly
what you can do with it!).
If you enter a census area and nothing else at all, then you will get
everyone enumerated in that area (which could be many thousands of names).
You will be able to trawl through them using the "Neighbors" facility.
Likewise, you can ask the program to give you everyone born in, say,
Nantwich. But could you tell us why you want to do this and what you hope
to do with the results, which may help us to advise you further? I have
done this exercise myself, but it was for a special study on one particular
parish in Yorkshire where I wanted to analyse how many people had actually
been born in the same parish where they were enumerated in the 1881 census.
The results, BTW, were surprising - under 50% had actually been born in the
parish where they were living, though I doubt this was typical generally.
