Hi Peter,
From my tree I would say it was usually the mother's surname as a middle
name. We have: Williams; Boden; and Breward used in that way. But two sets
of parents in the family used Colley as a middle name not because of an
ancestress married in 1728 but because of her brother a family benefactor
by bequests in 1790!
