Subject: Re: [CHS] IGI and Parish Records
Though many entries of a churches records may be recorded in the IGI, it by
no means suggests the entire film is recorded. The IGI entries are usually
cite the sources of information that has been used in the compilation of
family information which is submitted to the Ancestral File. So, always go
to the film of the church records. There have been errors in the IGI and you
want to make sure that the information recorded is what was actually what
appeared in the record. These records are transcribed by volunteers who are
human and at times make errors.
It is also suggested when viewing a film of church records that the
researcher also avail himself to the Bishop's Transcript film, as well.
Sometimes pages from the original church register is difficult to read or
damaged and the Bishop's Transcript is a wonderful backup. However, I have
noticed that at times not all information seems to be transcribed into the
Bishop's Transcript. This is usually the case of a birth out of wedlock or
something that the local parish felt may be an embarrassment.
Hope this helps.
