Subject: [CHS] Signatures on BIRTH and WEDDING CERTIFICATES - TRUE/FALSE or GUESSES?

Dear Listers
Thank you to everyone who replied to my posting.
Just to give you some idea as to why I asked the question -
My name is EDWARD FELSTEAD
When I first searched for my G-G-Grandfathers wedding certificate on
CHESHIREBMD using FELSTEAD
I got "No records found"
But when I searched using soundex or near UP it came but spelt
PHEALSTEAD.
Sure enough on the certificate it was spelt PHEALSTEAD!!
Over the years through the generations the name has come to be spelt
FELSTEAD.
Now comes the problem!
My G-G-Grandfather was born in "AMERICA-British Subject" in 1839 and
came over to ENGLAND
to marry in CHESTER in 1860.
If I wanted to search,say shipping lists,or census returns for my
ancestors in America what do I do?
Is his name PHEALSTEAD or FELSTEAD or................
I am sure you see my problem!
