Hi Elda,
I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments, and believe that for history's
sake and future generations, records should be kept as a matter of course.
However, I think that so far as recording headstones and inscriptions is
concerned, it cannot always be expected to be done by family history
societies who all do so much to contribute to the recording of historical
documents already.
Sometimes these societies and their volunteers are so busy they can't take
on everything that needs doing. In my area there is an individual who is
compiling a local 'pioneer' register, because the FHS does not have the time
or resources. It has recently compiled a local school register which was a
mammoth task.
My personal feeling is, if there is a need, don't wait for others. If you
have the time and resources, don't be afraid to take on the task. (Check
first whether or not it has been done, of course. There's no sense in
re-inventing the wheel - and check with the local FHS or historical society
that they are not just about to do it. If that is the case, then volunteer
to be on the committee - extra hands are always needed, even if it is just
for the typing or collating, and not the field work.) Having said that,
there are quite a number of cemetery lists done some years ago and which
need updating. I've got my eye on one where I am. When I have the time later
in the year, I guess I'll ask a friend if they would like to accompany me -
it can be a bit lonely in an out-of-the-way cemetery!!
It's an ongoing job, this history stuff.
