No newcomer to genealogy and UK research can afford not to start with
GENUKI. It is quite simply "the" place where everyone should begin - if,
that is, you haven't got a decent book on the subject, which I would
always recommend all newbies to obtain before doing anything by way of
research.

Genuki is the umbrella site for all UK and Ireland research and is
arranged county by county, so it is not just for Cheshire research but
every county in the land where you had ancestors. The "Getting Started"
section contains some excellent advice for beginners and I recommend Roy
Stockdill's "Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History" for a
comprehensive and easy-to-understand guide to the sources available.
