Bredbury actually lies to the south of the Mersey, so it was part of
Cheshire :-)

All of the modern borough of Stockport was Cheshire, except for the
former Lancashire townships of Reddish and Heaton Norris, which were
transferred to Cheshire in the early 20th century. But you're quite
right that the old course of the River Mersey formed the ancient
county boundary.
