Subject: [CHS] Coal mines in Stockport?
Date: Sun, 10 Nov 2002 08:48:05 EST

I am wondering how close to Stockport in the 1870-1883 time period would
there have been working coal mines? My g-grandfather was born in Stockport
proper in 1854 (his father was Irish), married in 1883 and then emigrated in
1884 immediately to the coal fields of Pennsylvania where he worked his whole
life as a miner.
Was it normal to live in Stockport yet travel, for example, to Wigan each day
to work? Any information on the 'daily work commute' for this time period is
very much appreciated.
