In addition to coal mines I recall being shown by my father some sealed
entrances leading into the old red sandstone on which Stocport lies. I
recall that he thought that there were miles of such tunnels under the town
(whether this is tru or not I couldn't say) and when he was young (1920s) it
was possible to get into some of them.
