Thanks to Barb, Antony and others for your comments; when I asked for IRCs at the Post office here(in California) they looked at me askance and said they hadn't had them for years, or maybe it was my Aussie accent?? In any case, sounds like Paypal, which my husband suggested, might be a good option for orders. Not sure how many places actually have it though. Will have to enquire.

Gordon is right, it isn't safe to send card details by e-mail, which is why I've been avoiding dealing with those organisations that request such, and am looking for alternatives.
