The codes '8a', '8b', etc. are relate to the holdings of the General
Register Office, who use a completely different filing system to the
local registrars. So if you wrote to Manchester, for example, quoting
that reference, they would politely advise you to apply to the GRO.

Unless you know the name of the church, chapel or register office where
the wedding took place, and a rough date, there's no point applying to
the local registrars for marriage certificates, because most districts
don't have a centralised index.

And since the records for the old Chorlton district have been divided
between three different register offices, that's going to make the entry
even harder to find :-)
