Dear Pat,
Sutton, with Norton, Aston and Weston, is one of the most common place names in England: the origin of them is South township, North
... East ... and West ... Usually in relation to a larger place which has a different name. They are often, but not always, followed
by the name or title of the owner of the manor concerned, which helps to distinguish them from each other.

How many Sutton's are there in Cheshire?
I know of 2 - Sutton (Nr. Macclesfield) and Sutton Weaver (Nr. Runcorn).
I have an elusive ancestor, who on the 1881 census simply states that she is
from Sutton, Cheshire.
To compund matters, she married in Wolverhampton, Staffs , and there is also
a Sutton in Staffs.
Anyway, I THINK I have convinced the other half to take me to the Sutton
(Nr. Macclesfield) tomorrow, (provided it's not raining - I hate soggy
paper) and if so, I intent to jot down the names in the Churchyard - just in
case this IS "my" Sutton.
With the permission of the list, once I have copied them up I will post them
if that will help anyone.
Regards
Pat
