I understand that the IGI has recently been enhanced.
To quote from the news page at http://www.familysearch.org
"Where possible, records in the International Genealogical Index are now
lineage-linked. This allows a user to access and even download a pedigree
or family group record from an individual's record. Multiple events, if
known, will be displayed in the individual record. Also, the International
Genealogical Index will be updated more often."
This may be part of the answer to Elaine's question:
> An ancester of mine George SALMON's marriage appears on the IGI pages
