Marrying in-laws seems to have been accepted in some communities - again probably more by non-conformists.
My great-grandfather, Joseph ATHERTON married Jane HICHELL, his deceased wife's sister in 1886, and took her to live in the house he had shared with his first wife, Margaret Hichell. Margaret died soon after the birth of her youngest child, leaving Joseph with four children and the baby had been sent to live with Jane & her mother.
I always thought it was rather a practical arrangement. The two parties already knew each other well, and an aunt would already have an interest in the welfare of her sister's children.
In Joseph & Jane's case they went on to have six more children all of whom prospered ... Elizabeth
