But the Census isn't free in the USA... You need to pay to get it through
Ancestry.com.

Of course, maybe if you're in New York...

As I recollect, the 1901 fiches are still a/v in the local library (maybe) -
what the PRO & their agents are protecting is not the data but their
intellectual capital in (a) writing the search engine and (b) transcribing
all the data so you can search it from the comfort of your own home without
paying £xxx for the train fare / petrol to London.

Of course people are free to write decoders. And the PRO are equally free to
scramble the data to bamboozle them. Frankly, if it were my intellectual
capital, so would I....

Further - there is a very simple way for the PRO to protect it properly - do
what ScotlandsPeople do and make the index searches chargeable as well... Be
thankful they haven't done that... yet.

(Mind you - I wouldn't mind another decade of visibility.)
