In Stephen Roberts book about Hoylake and Meols, he has one extract from the
17th century.
1625 showing the area as 'Houlse'
Theres the spelling Hoolse in 1729.
I think a lot of it was down to how the particular person spelled it!
I don't think Hoylake is considered part of West Kirby these days, they are
towns in their own rights.
The irony is that Hoose was a tiny area and Great Meols much larger, but
these days, 'Meols' is considered part of Hoylake, so for example my own
business is Carr Farm, Meols, Hoylake, Wirral.
Its not surprising that people get confused about the area!!!

Here is some information for you extracted from the "Wirral Hundreds"
HOYLAKE
Hoylake cum West Kirby is a civil parish (SJ 2188) created in 1894 by
uniting Grange (part), Great Meols, Hoose, Little Meols and West Kirby.
Transferred to the county of Merseyside in 1974.
Great Meols was a township in West Kirby Parish, Wirral Hundred (SJ 2390),
which became part of Hoylake cum West Kirby civil parish in 1894. It
included the hamlets of Farnalls Green and Sandhey. The population was 140
in 1801, 170 in 1851 and 821 in 1901.
Hoose was a township in West Kirby Parish, Wirral Hundred (SJ 2189), which
became part of Hoylake cum West Kirby civil parish in 1894. The population
was 60 in 1801, 589 in 1851 and 2701 in 1901.
Little Meols was a township in West Kirby Parish, Wirral Hundred (SJ 2188),
which became part of Hoylake cum West Kirby civil parish in 1894. It
included the town of Hoylake, and had a population of 123 in 1801, 170 in
1851 and 2850 in 1901.
Hilbre Island was an extra-parochial place in Wirral Hundred (SJ 1887),
which became part of Little Meols civil parish c.1880. It had a population
of 0 in 1811 and 10 in 1851.
The population of Hoylake cum West Kirby was 10911 in 1901 and 17892 in
1951.
