I think it is uncommon. It may have been a question of economics (a free
place being available), or it may have indicated a piece of family history
such as the one causing my mother-in-law to be buried with her parents.
My father-in-law's first wife died in her mid thirties. He re-married and
raised a second family. When the time came he indicated that he wished to
be buried with his first wife. His second wife complied, reluctantly.
Twenty-five years later, when her time came, she said that she though it
would be wrong for a man's two wives to lie side-by-side, so insisted on
going to her parent's grave.
