Thanks Brett

The author must be so obscure that I forgot I had a copy on my bookshelf
:-(

How about the next edition having a list of the codes used and their
meanings?

That would be the Chester & Ellesmere Port District, created in 1974 and
renamed Cheshire West in 1998. So it's the office at Chester you need to
apply to for the certificate.

There is a handy little booklet which lists all the districts from 1837
to the present, compiled by someone whose name escapes me for the moment
:-) 'A Handbook to the Civil Registration Districts of England and
Wales' is available from the FHS of Cheshire or the Federation of Family
History Societies, price 4.95 pounds + postage.

Hope this helps,
