Cheshire and Chester Archives and Local Studies Service has just been
awarded 159,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund to digitise the 19th century
Cheshire tithe maps and make them available on the Internet, linked to
their tithe apportionments. Users will be able to search, for example,
for a person and find which land they occupied or owned, or find out what
land in a particular area of the county was used for. This major
innovative project will be of use to family historians, school children
and academics alike, as well as anyone interested in the history of
particular town or village.
The project will take 2 years to complete, but is already underway, with
around 40 volunteers working at home entering data from copies of the
tithe apportionments onto a spreadsheet or database. If you have
Microsoft Excel or Access and would like to take part in this project,
please contact Paul Newman ().
