A yeoman was a social status between a gentleman and husbandman. It
usually indicates that he was either a copyholder or freeholder, or
both, that owned the land that he farmed. A husbandman was usually a
tenant farmer. In some places a yeoman had the status of a minor
gentleman. A gentleman did not work the land he owned. He usually
leased it out to tenants and yeoman.

Subject: [CHS] YEOMAN AND FARM BALIFF

I have found out that my ancestor was a Yeoman in 1850 then and his son
was
a later a Farm Baliff somewhere in the Lostock Gralam area, sorry but
can
anyone tell what a Yeoman would be responsible for and where in this
area one
might have employed on.

Regards Gill
