Hi Malcom,
I just recently got membership of Ancestry, and found it quite difficult at
first as you described.
The secret is I have found that little is usually better than more.
At the top of the search box, you have option to search 'exact' or 'Ranked
Search'. Try using exact search, which will narrow it down.
But try leaving town or civil parish out if you get little or nothing.
I sometimes just put County in for residence, and if you have a town in
birth place try it with or without.
It is just a matter of trying different ideas.
