Sorry to come into this thread rather late, but there is an excellent
website with a weather timeline:

It is very detailed, so you might find somethig useful here. It helped me
to understand yet another factor apart from Rationing and Homesickness, which
could have led my mum to take us back to Belgium in the very hard winter of
1947.
