That's one of the reasons I love this list - fresh eyes on the facts. Of
course, "bookmaker" could be "bootmaker" (far more likely ????)
Do you have all the details for the family in 1891 that you found -
don't suppose there's a Florence Leyland / Layland in the house is
there?
Many many thanks
Amanda

Dare I suggest he was a BooTmaker rather than a booKmaker ?
If, the family are on the 1891 census in Wigan listed as Layland. Lily
is 4
months old.
Based on that, I guess the 1891 entry is the birth you're seeking.
I couldn't spot them either though in 1901.

I have posted this interest a while back - hoping for a bit more luck a
year on:
Marriage took place April 10th 1910, after Banns Tranmere St
Catherine's:
Henry Walker Burke, 22, Bachelor, Bricklayer, Residence at time of
marriage: 1 Whitford Road, Father: James Henry Burke, Profession:
Jobber
LILY LEYLAND, 21 Spinster, Residence at time of marriage: 68 West Bank
Road, Father: WILLIAM LEYLAND, Profession: Bookmaker
Witnesses: John Wright, Florence Wright
According to the marriage Lily would have been born about 1888 / 1889.
But her husband (Henry Burkes) gave his age as 22 in 1910, implying a
birth of 1888, yet I know he was not born until 1891. So both could have
overstated their age at marriage, and Lily may have been born nearer
Henry's age (1891 / 1892). Their first child (Leslie Charles) was born
1st quarter 1911
Ancestry showed a possible birth 2nd quarter 1892 and 1st quarter 1891
- both Wigan ?
There is a marriage on Lancashire bmd of a John Wright to Florence
Leyland 1906 St Thomas Wigan - so whether the Florence who witnessed
Lily's wedding was Lily's sister?
I do not know where Lily was born (could have been Cheshire or further
afield into Lancashire)
I'm hoping there is enough information above for someone to help me find
Lily and her family in any census - don't now if her father's
occupation as "bookmaker" in 1906 helps at all?
Many thanks
Amanda
