Hello Adrian B et al,
Let us not demean the AWARD of Gallantry medals or the ISSUE of other Service,
War and Campaign medals;
by referring to them as WON, the only WINNERS of medals are those gambled in a
card game or put into auction.
I know many people refer to medals being WON when they actually mean for:-
A]. CAMPAIGN & WAR MEDALS which are ISSUED to the deserving recipitants'
B]. GALLANTRY MEDALS which are AWARDED to the deserving recipitants
I hope this information is taken in the spirit it is offered.

I THINK that the way it works is that they have the name, rank, unit and
serial effective at the time of the award. For a campaign medal (i.e. Star,
War or Victory), this _will_ be the last number, etc. For a gallantry medal
it will be the one applicable when the medal was won.
