Thank you Alan, for clarification in the above. This has always been a 'bone
of contention' with me, the daughter of two WWll Vets. My father was ISSUED
10 Campaign medals, plus AWARDED one (11 in total). One of the ISSUED
medals has an AWARDED bar/star on it. That particular medal was for Korean
War Campaign (issued), and includes a Presidential Citation, which the whole
Batt. (2-PPCLI) was AWARDED, in I believe 1952. The 11th medal was AWARDED
long after the Korean Campaign, to all surviving Canadian Korean War Vets,
for their Peacekeeping duties in that undeclared war.
My parents never referred to any of their medals as having been WON and
would correct us [younger years] if we used that word. Always ISSUED,
though once in awhile I will refer to the medals having been EARNED,
particularly the Korean one(s), as Dad was wounded in the battle for which
the Presidential Citation was awarded.
