Thanks for that information and the detail given. My quest began after a pub lunch in Grappenhall and a wander round the churchyard. I wondered what the local employment had been in the 19c and noted some of the memorials. When I got home I searched the 1881 using the names from tombstones and then hopped from household to household looking at employment.
Most were farm owners or labourers,servants,gardeners or tanners....the search then began for tanneries on the internet One of my family links is with a tanning family ( Ashbrook) in Latchford which is close to Grappenhall. .
 I should really have been out in the garden enjoying the sunshine !
But many thanks for the time you gave to answering. I will certainly look for the book and try the tithemaps.
