Your comments above caused me to chuckle, as they reminded me of our visit
to my husband's great-grandparents' graves at St. Peter's Church in
Melverley Shrops. The Vicar and the Groundsman kept referring to St.
Peter's as the 'new' church, with mentions of the 'old' church having burnt
to the ground. The 'new' church looked extremely old to us ... even to my
Sussex born/bred husband. Our [then 18y old] daughter eventually asked the
Vicar when the 'new' church had been built? His answer was 1406.
Un-interrupted services have been held on the exact spot since sometime
around the 12th C, to this day.

1406. (G-grandparents' gravestones can be seen in the photo. They lived
next door, at Church House.)
As you say, if another use had not replaced the original, locals would still
refer to the old.
