Subject: [CHS] George REDFERN in Stamford (Lincolnshire) Workhouse
Date: Tue, 15 Mar 2011 16:21:34 -0000

The following is an extract from the Minutes to the Board of Guardians of
the Stamford Union, Lincolnshire. I thought it might be of interest to
someone on this list:

The Lincolnshire Archives reference to the minute book is PL15/102/9 and
this case appears on pages 112-113

21 December 1859. Case of George REDFERN aged 42
George Redfern, Labourer, a Casual Pauper, appeared before the
Board. It appeared that he and his Wife and 2 Children George aged 9 years
and Charles aged 7 years had a few days previously been admitted into the
Workhouse of this Union where the Wife had given Birth to a Child which had
been named "Mary" but the mother had died. Redfern stated that he belonged
to Halkin in Flintshire and was desirous of returning towards that
neighbourhood in search of work. That he would take his two Sons with him;
and if the Guardians would be kind enough to keep the Infant in the
Workhouse for 2 or 3 months, he would undertake to fetch it away and would
never desert it. Redfern further stated that his mother was dead, and if his
Father was alive he would probably be found as "Joseph Redfern, Carpenter
Seacombe near Birkenhead". That all his Brothers and Sisters, except one
(Bathsheba the wife of Dennis DUGGAN of Seacombe Labourer) were in America,
and consequently he had no Relatives who could take care of the Infant. And
the subject having been duly considered, it was determined to keep the Child
for the present, and Redfern had leave to depart, taking with him his two
Sons and undertaking to fetch his Infant Daughter in two or three months.
