The set of maps covers all the UK, though the level of detail in some areas
is less than others. Readers of this list will be interested in Cheshire.
The spelling of many names on the map is odd and I don't know whether that's
simply normal variation or whether it denotes a genuine difference in the
names. Or both. In the area round Nantwich (written like that!), there's
Roop for Rope, which means little I suggest. Shinton for Shavington seems an
interesting take, suggesting a shorter pronunciation than now. Aighton
appears to be Acton (near Nantwich) - curious - and there's a Walshrow on
the opposite side of the river Weaver to Nantwich which must, I just
realised, be Welsh Row, now a road rather than a place.

Cambridge University have digitised their set of proof maps prepared for
John Speed's 'Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine', which was published
in 1611/12. These are now available on their website...
