Hi All,

Many thanks to all of you who came up with information on this couple,
including Elaine, Bob and especially Holly, who has really got to grips with
them.

This is what I think happened:

Marry in 1843 in Macclesfield.

Living on Queen Street, Macclesfield in 1851, Joel is a Hand Loom Weaver &
Hannah a Silk Winder.

Have a daughter in 1855 in Manchester (Martha Henshall Shatwell - still to
be confirmed).

Leave daughter behind in the UK and travel to America in 1857 -
Philadelphia. Joel is listed as a Weaver.

Daughter dies in Macclesfield in 1859 age 4 (still to be confirmed).

Are in Philadelphia for the 1860 US census. Joel is still a weaver.

Still in Philadelphia for the 1870 US census. Joel has now gone up in the
world and is a Sugar Dealer.

Perhaps this really was a case of finding the pot of gold at the end of the
rainbow. Joel & Hannah don't appear to have had any other children.
Perhaps the loss of their daughter was too much for Hannah, especially as
she was so far away. Perhaps she was already ill when they left? We'll
never know, but at least they seem to have made a good life for themselves
in the US.

Thanks as usual to the kind people on this list, another little mystery
solved!

Regards

Lesley
