Hello Guinea Pigs,
I need to impress upon everybody the necessity of being polite, to each
other and....especially to the Family Tree DNA Laboratory. Family Tree
Laboratory has a wealth of information about their tests. We need each other
and the fastest way to hurt everybody is to be impolite.
Certain protocols for where to go for information are appropriate. It is
not rocket science...a number of us are familiar with a couple of these mail
lists.
1) If you have DNA Test questions or problems, post them to this list
or to me, Gary Childress, directly
. Anything that involves this Group
Childress-Childers DNA Project, its administration, errors, information,
general chat about DNA should go to either address above.
2) If you want second opinions about DNA test results, opinions from other
DNA experts and opinions from participants on other surname DNA projects or
opinions from laboratory staff post to
(Subscribe by sending one word "subscribe" in the body of an e-mail to
). This list is full of experts on DNA
including the geneticists at Family Tree DNA, the laboratory we are using.
This is the best way to ask questions of FamilyTreeDNA Laboratory as an
individual. Post it to that list, and you will get multiply responses. If
you get responses, please re-post (copy and paste) them to our forum here,
.
3) Please refrain from talking directly to FamilyTreeDNA Laboratory. They
discounted everybody's test in part to treat us like a Group. Questions to
them should come from the Group Representative, me. If you want to pay for
the street rate of getting tested, $209 you can ask them whatever you
want....but for a discount, the laboratory is trying to talk to us as one
entity. That will be most important when we, the Group, ask for their help
in understanding our test results. If one of us alienates a geneticist, it
hurts all of us. Go through me, please. I am the Project Organizer,
Coordinator, Scape-Goat. We, the Group, will try to formulate the questions
we need answered and I will submit those questions to FamilyTree DNA
Laboratory and post answers to the list.
Right now there are 21 one of us taking the test and it is best if we don't
duplicate our questions and squander their time.
Family Tree DNA has given me access to their software programs, on which I
enter data on participants and follow the tracking of these tests, and get
some reports on our project. I can access their data bases, correct simple
data on participants, order kits, get discounts and print out some results.
When it comes time to interpret your DNA test results we will all need the
good will of Family Tree DNA geneticists to help explain the science and
conclusions that our test results show. They will volunteer more
information, explanations, and exhibit more patience with our novice
questions, if they are on good terms with us, the Group. When any of us
alienate them, it hurts us all. You are now part of the Childress-Childers
DNA Project, a group effort.
4) If you have genealogy questions try posting to
(Subscribe by sending one word "subscribe" in the body of an e-mail to
) or (Subscribe by
sending one word "subscribe" in the body of an e-mail to
)... to interact with people who are doing
general paper research on these surnames but who are not necessarily
familiar with DNA questions. It would be nice, if eventually, you can also
post to those lists your conclusions about how your DNA effects your paper
genealogy so that you create a record in the Rootsweb archives of your
opinions for other researchers. It would be helpful to educate other
researchers who don't take the test what your conclusions are so that
everybody benefits. By doing so you may also be encouraging others to take
the DNA test and that creates an ever expanding understanding of the
Childress and Childers DNA trail.
