Am glad to know that someone out there uses this list as this is
the first digest I have received since I subscribed a few weeks ago!

Does anyone know about Europeans in Amoy, China in the 1830's,
my gggrandfather James Shaw was born there in 1831. His
marriage certificate and childrens birth certificates in Australia all
gave Amoy as his place of birth. His father's occupation was
storekeeper and his mother's maiden name Lew.

I have been told that there were no European women in China at
that time and this lead me to believe that perhaps his mother was
Chinese. However a cousin has just given me a photograph of my
ggrandmother, James daughter (c1885) and she is definately
European.

I have also read that the East India Co was active in the region at
that time.

Would be glad of any information,

and

Congrats on the birth of your baby girl!

Cheers,
