Well...on these records I'm looking at, the original issue of the scrip is
to persons with Choctaw names, and in some cases the original person is
deceased, in more cases not...and the non-Indian names that appear on the
record are primarily listed as "assignees" of the Choctaw named person, and
the land received is in THEIR name for THEM and THEIR heirs forever, which
means they are not getting the land for the Choctaw, but for themselves...in
some cases, I see that there are many names on a record, starting with the
original Choctaw, and then his representatives, which are also Choctaw
named, then it goes into non-Indian named people as "assignees" for the last
one who was representative....at least this is the way it appears from the
record...I realise that in some cases it could be relatives who are getting
the land, but I'm afraid that is not the rule...One of my Choctaw ancestral
relatives was to get land in MS, and he got rooked out of it and eventually
came to I.T. The rest of my ancestors managed to aquire land thru cash
purchase, in MS, AL, and LA,but for some reason were never able to keep the
lands...seems they were always on the run with other families..they always
traveled in a group...
That "residency rule" was a last minute, and blatant violation of the 1866
Treaty by some Choctaw officials with white blood and moreso white attitudes
who wanted only their own family and friends to get land...
I had 3 grandmothers ON the rolls who got kicked off illegally at the last
minute...they WERE Choctaw, and their residence WAS in I.T., it didn't
matter...some heavily white blooded/attituded Choctaw officials and their
white lawyers, along with my own family's white lawyers, screwed them off
their farm and off the rolls by hiding legal records...I know this happened
to more than my family...
