The concept of royalty was brought in by the Europeans, as that was the
mind-set they had come from. There are many words in all different
languages for the leader of a group of people, sachem, mingo, etc., but to
the Europeans, the head of a group of Indians was the "King". Therefore,
his wife was, to them, "Queen" and his children "Princesses" or "Princes".
What a particular person would be called would be dependent on which
language he spoke. But in today's Native American society, to refer to a
female as an "Indian princess" or "maiden" is considered offensive, as it
gives European cultural definition to a distinctly different type of
societal structure.
