My grandfather's brother ran away with a circus that was passing through
Salisbury, Rowan Co., NC. This would have to have been in his teens, so
I estimate that it would have been around 1890 or so, allowing him to be
approximately 15 years old. He said that he was a painter with the
circus, and I don't know whether than means a scenery painter or a wagon
painter. I have the impression that he was with them about two years or
so.

His name was George Grayson POOLE (1875-1851).

Does anyone know of a traveling circus in that part of the U.S.? In 1890
Salisbury would have been just another small southern city, but they did
have good railroad ties to the rest of NC.
