The movie was referrring to Cob's Brigade who had many Irish in the ranks.
Please correct if they were not present at Fredericksburg.

Greetings from Perth, Australia.
I've been watching the discussion about the Irish at F'burg.
Unfortunately the movie hasn't got here yet but I can
tell you that there was no Confederate Irish Brigade.
I've researched this point thoroughly. I have never
heard mention of the "Ab" either.

Hi Kevin,

There were so many "Irish Brigades" in the Civil War!
But the scenes in Gods and Generals, I really expected Meagher to have a
more prominent role (since
he was presented at all). However, it is supposed to be a three part series,
so we will probably see
more of the "Irish Brigades" and maybe more of Meagher (and I'll be
disappointed if they don't show Pat
Cleburne by the third installment).
But it a creation of Ted Turner's own heart, I think (notice him sitting
in the second row of
generals in one scene). And, I suspect he has enough clout to have shown
whatever he wishes (Producer's
Cut, I suppose).
The two things I liked most were 1) That for the first time ever, I
think, it clearly showed that
the Irish were not all "New York Yankees". They fought, and bled, and died
to win their spurs in the
South, as well as in the North. 2) The part where the Georgia Irish Brigade,
after slaughtering their
Union brethren, were so moved by the bravery of those men of the Union
"Irish Brigade", that they rose
up in honor. First one "Abu!", then another, then the entire line of
Georgians "Abu! Abu! Abu!".
I expect no one else in the theater spoke Gaeilge, nor did they need to.
My son, Eamonn, turned and
asked "What are they saying?", but how can you explain the beauty of that in
the time it takes to cut to
another scene?
How does one explain the look in the Georgians eyes, or the agony on
their faces as they stood
triumphant crying out "Abu!!" "Abu!!"? I know I couldn't just then. My
cheeks were wet.
"For Ever". For ever, for ever, for ever.....

My Best to All,

Phil
