Eamonn,
If you're interested in Fredericksburg a novel well worth reading is
"Fredericksburg" by Kirk Mitchell. It is told from the point of view of the
Irish at Marye's Heights and alternates between Meagher's men and your
Antrim-born Col Robert McMillan of Cobb's Bgde. I haven't finished the book
yet but it seems to be quite well researched.
"Clear the Confederate Way" is a good read. For those interested in the
Louisiana Irish one should read Terry L Jones' "Lee's Tigers" and James P
Gannon's "Irish Rebels, Confederate Tigers", the latter being a history of
the 6th Louisiana Vols.

Gabriel a chara,
Thanks for replying. Well yeah the 6th LA were at F'burg but not on Marye's
Heights. They were much further down stream under Stonewall Jackson - as
usual. The regiment behind the (other)stonewall on Marye's Heights was the
24th Georgian, which I believe had one company of Irishmen, the McMillan
Guard. Phillips Legion was also in this part of the line, they also included
one Irish company. When Cobb was killed and Irishman called Robert McMillan
took over his command. Most of this information and much more is from Kelly
O'Gradys "Clear the Confederate Way" (Fag an Ballaugh) which I'm sure you'd
enjoy if you haven't read it already.
Yes I've heard great things about the Carter House.
Best wishes
Éamonn

I think Cleburne's stagnation had more to do with his controversial circular
about enlisting black soldiers in return for their freedom. This was
political anathema to the powers of the day, even though the South was
desperate for manpower.
As far as I recall, Jefferson Davis acted on Cleburne's proposal during the
closing months of the war - when it was too late.
