Hi Lynn,
Try Ancestry's "American Civil War Soldiers" database. Most of the
entries here include ages and comments, as opposed to the "Civil War
Service Records" one. You should be able to narrow things down by
eliminating those who definitely aren't him. The pension index has 5
P.M. entries (mostly guys who used an alias); you could use these to
whittle down some more.
The NY State Archives - http://www.archives.nysed.gov/aindex.shtml - has
records as well, which are not necessarily the same as what you'd get
from NARA. Not exactly sure what you'd get, but they will do a by-mail
request for $3 per person. "The Union Preserved - A Guide to Civil War
Records in the New York State Archives" by Harold Holzer and David
Lorello goes into a lot more detail of what's available there. Worth
checking out beforehand if you can do a field trip there.
If there's an obit, that might say something.
There's also the possibility that he joined the Regular Army or Navy.
The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System - http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/
- lists 6 P.M.s in the Army; very little info is in this database, but
so far it's the only one on-line which includes a list of the regulars.
It does, however, reference you to the film where his enlistment
registry entry is (I think the FHL has these; I know HeritageQuest
does). Unfortunately, their Navy database is still in the works.
Hope this helps.
Dennis
