From the Bulletin of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United
States (MOLLUS), August 1971:
The Founders (all of whom were residents of Germantown):
SAMUEL BROWN WYLIE MITCHELL, A.M., M.D., who has the distinction of being
the owner of Insignia Number One, of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion
of the United States, entered the 18th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on
April 24, 1861, where he served until August 6, 1861. On August 17, 1861 he
became Surgeon of the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry. On December 23, 1862, he was
commissioned Surgeon-in-Chief of the Second Brigade, First Cavalry Division,
Army of the Potomac. On August 6, 1863, he became Surgeon-in-Charge of the
Cavalry Corps Hospital of the Army of the Potomac. He was mustered out with
the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Doctor Mitchell was born on August 16, 1828, and was the son of Archibald
Mitchell, who for a long period was the Principal of the University Academy
(later the University of Pennsylvania). Doctor Mitchell graduated at Central
High School in 1849; entered the Sophmore class of the University of
Pennsylvania and received the degree of B.A. in 1852. He entered the
Department of Medicine while still a student in the Department of Arts, and
graduated in medicine in 1854. For a time he was resident physician at the
Blockley Almshouse (later Philadelphia General Hospital) and shortly
thereafter entered private practice and continued until the outbreak of the
Civil War.
On returning from the War, Dr. Mitchell came back to Philadelphia but did
not resume medical practice, but gave his time to numerous societies with
which he was connected. He was a Founder of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity;
was Recorder of the Pennsylvania Commandery of MOLLUS from the beginning of
the Order. He was a member of the Penn Club, Academy of Natural Sciences and
was a Mason. He had one of the finest private libraries on the subject of
heraldry.
