I've learned over the past 30 years that you can't understand your family's
history without studying the History of the times in which they were
living. If you don't, you are merely collecting and recording names and
dates.....a rather mundane exercise, IMHO.
I have read the "spirited" discussions during the last few days and have
read only one that I considered an immature flame and that was from
someone, I think, named Keith. My delete key still works and if I choose to
leave, I won't announce it here, with unsolicited advice to and criticism
of the Listowner. I will not let the door hit me in the rear as I leave
either.
I don't remember who said the following either, but its worth reading:
" There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is
proof against all arguments and which can not fail to keep a man
in everlasting ignorance--that principle is contempt prior to investigation."

Well said.. Cliff..
I have seen these discussion before too.. and my goal is not just names, but a study of the Civil War and an "understanding of the times".. for that I must go back beyond 1860, back beyond 1830.. heck.. I go all the way back to the Rev. War. and bring it forward and study the many things that took place for years leading up to "The War".. I always come away from one of these "healthy discussions" with more and different avenues to research.. my thanks to Mike, Hawk, Ed, Kevin, Bill and all those guys who are very knowledgeable on so many different aspects of the war.. "I learn for those who have the knowledge to teach".
