Here are my wife's, my people came from Ireland after the war.
1. Heinrich "Henry" William PEETZ, sometimes spelled PIETZ, 6th MO INF
VOL, born Braunswick (Brunswick), Lower Saxony, 1821, married Johanna
POEPEL, also from Lower Saxony, born 1821. Immigrated to Iron County,
MO abt. 1845.
Henry was in the battle of Pilot Knob, MO. His home was shot up during
the battle and the family hid in the woods until it was over. After,
his wife collected the lead and recast into bullets to sell back to the
military. The family, still in Pilot Knob, has the bullet molds as well
as the bullet-riddled furniture and boards from the old homestead after
it was torn down.
2. August ECKERT, 33d MA INF, born Prussia abt. 1835, got off the boat
in New Orleans abt. 1860. After the Federal Army occupation, he joined
the 33d MA stationed there, fought in the Red River Campaign, 1864, and
was wounded. Married Dorette PEETZ in Iron County in 1868.
His children were born in Cape Girardeau and Steelville, MO, and
eventually settled in St. Louis.
