Hello, Brian. Thanks for the welcome.
Most of the Hunters of New Madrid are descended from Joseph Hunter of Ireland, who settled in Virginia (I believe) in the 1700's. His descendents arrived in New Madrid, MO in the Late 1700's - early 1800's. I'll have to dig out my copy of "The Joseph Hunter and Related Families" and post a little more history here later.
I am Shapley R. Hunter IV, so yes, the name has been in the family for a few generations. The name has not been passed linearly, I 'inherited' it from a great-uncle. The name first appears in New Madrid in the person of Shapley (sometimes spelled Shapleigh) R. Phillips. The mother of the First Shapley R. Hunter was a Phillips. I am of the belief that someone in the Phillips family married into the Shapley family, and the name has been carried forward since.
V/R
Shapley
