Subject: Thomas Clayton, Northumberland Cpo., Pa, 1788

I am seeking information about a Thomas Clayton who first appears in 1788,=
buying land at Roaring Creek, Catawissa Twp., Nortumberland Co., Pa. (This=
is now in Franklin Twp., Columbia Co., Pa.) He apparently lived there the=
rest of his life. His will is dated 1820 and he died in 1831. Claytons=
remained in the area until at least 1856, when Thomas's grandson Thomas=
(son of William) moved to Lee Co., Illinois, and sold land to a younger=
brother Wellington Clayton.

I think it likely that this Thomas Clayton is connected to the Quakers of=
Chester Co., Pa, as there was a meeting established in Catawissa, and a=
meeting house built in 1796. One of Thomas' land transactions was a=
purchase in 1813 from John Cleaver, who (or his namesake) was a Quaker from=
Chester Co.

There appears to have been a second Thomas Clayton in the area who, in 1796,=
sold land at nearby Chillisquaque that his father Asher Clayton had=
purchased in 1770 from an Edward Clayton.

Any help in sorting out the families of these CLaytons will be greatly appre=
ciated!
