I have been attempting to trace a relative who came to South Africa in and
about the 1950's. His name was Ivan Clayton, and had a brother George
Clayton, who died in 1929. George Clayton was my grandfather. I do not have
much more information than that.
My father also a George Clayton, emigated to South Africa in 1966 with the
the family.

Some 7 years ago, I had the chance to visit an area on the East coast of
South Africa, known as Port Alfred, and found that the name Clayton, was
very prominent in that area.
This sparked some interest, and I found, that the Clayton family originally,
emigrated as part of the 1820 settlers. There were two brothers named George
Clayton, and John Clayton. They arrived on the ship the Chapman, and settled
on the then frontier.

The 1820 settlers, were used as a defense line in the kaffir wars that
followed. If I recall, both George, and John died in battle, with the Xhosa
tribes.

There is plentiful information about the 1820 families in the Grahamstown
Museums. The Claytons featured quite promently. There is unfortunately, not
much information going back beyond the 1820 date line, as to there origin,
and relation to Claytons that settled in the Americas.

If I recall the name, there was a lady by the name of Joan Clayton, that was
researching the roots of the 1820 Claytons.

Regards

Can you tell me more about Catherine Rhea. I, too, have a female Rhea
ancestor, Isabella Rhea, born 14 January 1751 in Augusta Co., VA, died
22 January 1803 in Jackson Co., GA. There is a difference of opinion
about her parents. She married James McCleskey in 1771 maybe in South
Carolina.
