Hello,
I noticed in your Claytons the name Newton. I am searching and am stuck on
my GG Grandfather and beyond. His name was Pleasant Newton Clayton b. 1803
in N Carolina we believe. He then went to KY, TN and Missouri. Do you know
where the middle name Newton came from? I am grasping for any information.
Somewhere there may be a lead. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Ruthe

Subject: [CLAYTON-L] Gowan Clayton
Hello everyone!! I am sending this message to the Clayton List to make sure
I don't miss anyone that has been kind enough to answer my plea for help.
THANK YOU ALL!!!!
Hi Dolly, nice to meet you and yes I have met Richard Heath and we have
corresponded. He's a lovely person. And hello Mary. Yes we have compared
notes and I am still looking for Sampson's father whenever I do any Clayton
research.
Dolly this is my direct line and where I stand. Gowan Clayton was in the
1790 and 1800 Census in the Greenville Dist.but none in the Spartanburg Dist
until 1810 and then there were two Gowans in the 1810 and 1820 Census in
Spartanburg Dist. There is a Jr. after the name on a land grant which
indicates to me that there must have been a Sr. somewhere around. The 1790
Census give Gowan's age as 32. So where was he during those 32 years? Was
this Gowan the Jr. on the land grant and the Gowan listed in Spartanburg,
age 27, actually Gowan the Third? Then there is Jeremiah Clayton. He is
listed in the 96 Dist. Spartanburg Co. in the 1790 Census. Is he Gowan's
father? In the Spartanburg Co. Records of the Commissioners of the Poor,
Gowan is listed as the agent for Jeremiah. There is a Jeremiah Clayton
listed on the 1755 Tax list for Granville Co., NC and also listed on the
muster roll for Col. William Eaton's militia Regiment, Capt. John Sallis'
Co. on 8 Cot. 1754 in!
Granville Co., NC Oh so many questions????
This is my direct line:
GOWAN Clayton Jr. and Frances (Hiram, Levina, SOLOMON, Elizabeth, Sarah
Rhoda, and Isaac.
SOLOMON and Nancy Brashears (JOHN GOWAN, Jeremiah, Isaac, James Solomon,
Frank, Rhoda Elizabeth, Nancy, W.L.,)
JOHN GOWAN and Sarah Elizabeth Barnett, (William Gowan, Thomas J., JOSEPH
WASHINGTON, George Lake, James Newton, Rosetta Jane, Nancy Melissa)
JOSEPH WASHINGTON and Nancy Jane Babb, (Elizabeth, Clifton, Dora, ROMAN
GOWAN, Clara, Paul Jones)
ROMAN GOWAN and Allie Cole, (ME)
I will be glad to share whatever information I have. As for Augustine
Clayton, I too believe him to be related.
Thanks again for all your help
Betty Clayton Hilton
