Hello again, here is another entry in the diary of Melissa Bowen Earl Miller
from her trip by covered wagon from Nebraska to Oregon in the late 1800's.
November 14th, 1895
This morning is cloudy and cold, while we were getting our breakfast,
Miles
went out to look at the Garden of the Gods. Was gone about an hour when he
came back we had our breakfast. Then, Kate and the boys went to see it, when
they came back, we went to packing up. We were going on the east side again
where we expect to wait for Jinkens. We drove through old town, and miles
stopped at a grocery and traded. Got some eggs and flour. We then drove as
far as brother Sharps, who lives in the springs, stoped their to warm, and
for Miles to do some peddling, to get provisions to last over the Sabath.
While we were getting warm, some of the sisters went out to the wagon,
unbeknown to us, and put some potatoes, bread and apples, and some apple
marmalade and tomatoes and preserves, so we had something for the Saboth.
Miles brought some beans and gram flour and a little meat, so we got along
very well. After we left Sharp's we drove three or four miles west of town
and camped beside the rock island road. Again, it being after dark when we
got their, so we fixed up and went to bed.
November 15th, 1895
This morning, Miles had to go three miles before he could find water.
While
he was gone, Kate and Harry went to the other way about two miles before she
could find water, so in the afternoon, we hitched up and drove about a mile,
so we could be near water, which was only about a mile near, stayed all
night.
